Look - No Brushes !
November’s Club Night was a little different from our usual, when Welsh artist Jentien Powell demonstrated her collage work - creating art without paint brushes. We were all engrossed.
Jentien used cardboard as a base. Onto this she drew a basic outline of the street scene - a row of houses in a variety of shapes. The cardboard was then pasted with diluted pva glue. Onto this Jentien overlaid pieces of crumpled tissue paper in a range of colours, plus other scraps eg. newspaper and corrugated card.
When the glue surface had dried, Jentien soaked it with water using a mop brush.
Now the fun bit - adding acrylic inks, squirting on from the top, tilting and turning, maybe spray on some water and allow the inks to run and mix.
So the next stage is to go over the outlines of the houses then using a wallpaper seam roller (!!) apply diluted acrylic paints in a variety of colours to block-in the houses. Be gentle so as to maintain texture and not fill in all the surface, giving a ‘hit and miss’ look.
Use the edge of a credit card loaded with black paint to mark in the house edges and with white paint to add the window frames.
Use corrugated card to add railings then finish off by adding some simple figures.
Bingo ! - an interesting street scene created with lots of fun and no brushes.
