Fabulous Finn Campbell-Notman

Sky Arts Landscape Painter of the Year 2023

Finn visited us in March 2024 - what a treat that was !

Finn had a ‘Swallows and Amazons’ early childhood, living on a houseboat in the Norfolk Broads. His later childhood was spent with his artist parents within a household of crafts men and women. It sounded an idyllic and inspirational start to his artistic life and career.

Finn believes that success in art is about bringing together what he draws from within to meet what he draws from without. To portray a story within his art, created in balanced harmony.

Charcoal and paper are his favourite materials.

Finn talked about his ‘Tainted Sublime’ Series. Cathartic work, using charcoal from the forest fires, caused by global warming, to create artworks that are then sold to help charities protect these environments.

We learnt how Finn works with charcoal and how each charcoal has its own colour depending on where it was sourced in the world.

Finn’s ‘Dante’s Inferno’ works in charcoal were amazing and beautiful. We learnt a little about how he created them.

Find more photos on Finn’s website.

Finn also works in oils. His latest ‘Dreamscapes’ Series has surrealistic, symbolic elements, rich and warm. He explained to us the importance of how it reflects himself - his knowledge of art and materials alongside his socio-political and ecological self.

It was good to hear about his process, the importance of composition

We felt honoured to have some of these large, original paintings amongst us.
