The Framing Queen

There are lots of pieces about all different techniques for producing wonderful art work. But what next?

If you want to display your work, say at our club’s Summer Exhibition, you will need to frame it.

There are two choices. To buy a ready made frame or to go to a framer.

The advantages of a ready made frame is that it is cheaper but the disadvantage is the choosing of the frame, checking it for flaws and spending an hour or two stressing that you’ve done it right.

The advantage of a framer is that you can choose from a large number of framing designs, you are using an expert who has all the equipment. Also your canvas might not fit a ready made frame. Who hasn’t found a ready frame is out by just a few millimetres?

There are several in our local area.

Introducing our old friend Claire Russell who works from her studio in Stone, Gloucestershire.

You will certainly get a warm welcome. And the first thing is to present your painting. This one was meant to be A4 but was too long for the bought frame by 3 mm. Annoying.

I chose the red frame design.

Claire carefully measured the painting. Note the notebook for entering the measurements and other details.

Next is a fearsome machine for cutting the bits of frame to the correct lengths.

This one fixes the corners perfectly in the blink of an eye.

Now comes the backing board. Careful measuring and cutting.

With the painting and glass (if required) inserted, the backboard is secured.

D Rings are applied. The picture cord is tied and the ends of the cords burnt to stop fraying.

Hey presto! Two paintings Claire had framed for me earlier. Please note the

designs for different frames behind her.

Claire’s prices are very reasonable and the service is excellent.
